Soil in the Mediterranean
Poor soils exist in ths region because of semi arid climate. The soils in the Mediterranean have adapted to the fires common in the biome and often show signs of endemism due to their distinct geographical nature, being in a biome both desert-like and in close proximity to the ocean. The soils' composition contains sand silt and clay particles which gradually create a reddish soil, a common soil type being Cambisols. Another common soil type in the mediterranean are Kastanozems, Calcisols, and Solonchaks, which are tyically found in more arid regions of the biome. These soils are specific to the marquis vegetation due to its plant-soil compatibility. For some examples of plants in the marquis family, see the tab "The Locals".
